President's Message for September 2009

Big thanks to our hosts who opened their hives and homes for this year’s Progressive Hive Tour.
I’m sorry that Jim and I could not attend. My family needed me in New Jersey. I may be President of the Long Island Beekeepers Club, but I live in Manhattan, and my family is in New Jersey. That creates tough logistics, occasionally. And lots of driving, in our 1982 yellow-and-black Volvo (The Bee-Mobile)!

August 5, we drove the Bee-Mobile to the Eastern Apicultural Society (EAS) meeting in Ellicottville, NY, near Buffalo – about 9 hours from home. Not so fun…
My workshop “Bee Fit for the Bee Yard” was well attended but thankfully fun. You can follow along and do the workout at www.bee-quick.com/beefit.

EAS was great. Everyone attending learned lots. Our Club’s Master Beekeepers were front and center. They represented our club and New York wonderfully. The social events were exceptional. Next year’s EAS is in North Carolina at Appalachian State University (lovely country), so make your plans now!

At EAS, I met with the many vendors of beekeeping equipment/supplies, and bragged about our Club’s 60th Anniversary in 2009. They were very generous in donating raffle prize for our meetings and extra-special gifts for our holiday party/anniversary celebration December 13. Save that date now! You will be amazed at all the surprises in store.

Jim and I were blessed to renew our wedding vows at EAS with someone many of you might know – Reverend Dick Chapin, a former member of our Club, who lives in Pennsylvania now. We hoped to renew our vows in the EAS bee yard, because bees brought us together, but those bees were ANGRY, with no forage. So, we had a peaceful blessing by a babbling brook and flower garden, near the golf course.

We’ll see you next month at the always-amazing Pig Roast hosted by Master Beekeeper Miguel Valentin with Hispanic music and dancing star performances and family fun.

REMEMBER – It’s a ***Saturday*** 9/19!
REMEMBER - to bring an appetizer, side dish, dessert, or whatever you’d like to add to the party. If you’d like wine, beer, or a cocktail, you’re welcome to BYOB.

Our winning streak continues! We gained 4 new family members this month, Dr. Melvin Boskin, Andy Jarmolwski and his family, Steven Chen and his family and Kurt Lagermann and his family. Welcome!

If I have neglected to thank any of our members, please know that your contribution is valued. You all make our Club the best it can Bee!

This is in the Holy Koran. It's very beautiful.

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
[16:68-69] And your Lord inspired the bee: build homes in mountains and trees,
and in the hives they build for you.
Then eat from all the fruits, following the design of your Lord, precisely.
From their bellies comes a drink of different colors, wherein
there is healing for the people.

Warmest regards,
Joanne Thomas Fischer
