Understanding the transmission dynamics of this system is imperative for us to develop solutions for high annual losses. Unfortunately\, there is still a lot we don't know about this s ystem\, including which bees mites are feeding on. For nearly 40 years w e thought mites preferred nurse bees\, when in fact\, they prefer to fee d on adult drones. This talk explains how this affects everything from d isease modeling to how we even sample for Varroa. Finally\, we finish by suggesting a new sampling technique that can help predict infestations months before they are an impending disaster.\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Zac Lamas\ n\n\n\nZac is a NIFA postdoctoral fellow under Jay Evans at the Bee Rese arch Lab in Beltsville\, MD. He focuses on how Varroa feeding behavior d rives viral transmission in a honey bee colony. His previous work uncove red that the ideal adult bee host for Varroa was misidentified for nearl y 30 years. Varroa actually aggregate on adult drones\, and only shift o nto worker bees when drones seasonally disappear from a colony. He is no w using his previous findings and weaponizing that information against V arroa. Our hope is to create an effective bait trap for cost-effective V arroa control. During his PhD he was the recipient of the PAm-Costco awa rd where he studied the vectorial capacity of Varroa destructor. He acti vely speaks at bee clubs and professional conferences\, largely sharing information on beekeeping management. Zac previously worked for Michael Palmer at French Hill Apiaries in Saint Albans\, Vermont. On the side Za c is the owner and operator of RockStar Queens. He produces quality nucl eus colonies and queens in central Maryland.\n\n\n\nBreak &\; Door Pr izes\n\n\n\nTake a moment to stretch your legs\, grab a refreshment\, an d participate in our raffle.
